About Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Park

Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Park

Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Park is situated on a narrow peninsula on the eastern tip of Madeira. This protected area covers a total length of approximately 9 km and is characterized by its distinctive, arid landscapes with dramatic cliffs and sweeping ocean vistas. The park is a haven for nature lovers due to its diverse flora and fauna, featuring endemic species such as the Madeira wall lizard and unique plant species adapted to the area's dry conditions. Historically, the region was used for grazing and agriculture before becoming a protected site in 1982. Today, it offers numerous recreational opportunities, primarily for hiking enthusiasts, with trails that provide breathtaking panoramic views of both the northern and southern coasts of Madeira. Visitors are also drawn to the park's birdlife, including the Madeiran storm-petrel and Cory's shearwater, making it a popular spot for wildlife viewing and photography.
